Help

Could you tell me please if you need to have a licence to own a King Parrot to have as a pet in QLD thanks.

Tassie

Gidday Tiger,the answer to your question is most definately yes.
As a rule of thumb if its native to Austarlia you need a permit to keep it,
In addition if you move your birds say from your residence to another residence you have to have a permit for that to.
Hope this helps.
I went through all the permit enquiries on Friday as I am looking into keeping some native lizards.
The same permit covers everything

"As a rule of thumb if its native to Austarlia you need a permit to keep it"

That is not correct.. there are many native birds that don't require a license. These include SC Cockatoos, corellas, galahs, cockatiels, budgies, many rosellas and small parrots, and various doves, quails and finches.

I believe you do need a license for a king parrot.

Tassie

Gidday Magpie,"not correct" you stated
I notice you state the obvious,Budgies,some doves,quails....etc
King quail,Jap quail,Zebra finches etc,fair enough.
"Many small Parrots? Bourkes,Turks,and I believe they may have lifted
permits on Scarlets. I am starting to struggle to think of "many" more
"Small native parrots.
"Many Rosellas" There are Four, Crimson,Green,Eastern and Western with two
sub species of the Eastern. You had better check the laws for QLD Magpie
because the last time I bred birds you needed permits for all of them.
Here is a few you do need need a permit for.
FINCHES,
Crimsons
Diamonds
Blue faced
Painteds
Pictorellas
Black Throats
Chestnut Breasted etc
PARROTS
Elegants
Crimson wing
Twenty eight
Hooded
Golden shouldered
Blue wing
King
Crimson rosella
Pale headed rosella
Eastern rosella etc
There are many many more that you need permits for.
If you want a complete list Magpie I would be glad to post it for you.
My post to Tiger might have been slightly correct.. :)

* rainbow lorikeet
* Port Lincoln parrot

* hooded parrot
* red-rumped parrot
* red-capped parrot
* princess parrot

Note that these native birds are still protected and you are not allowed to trap them in the wild. It is illegal to trap protected birds, including exempt species, anywhere in NSW. The maximum penalty for trapping a protected or threatened bird is a fine of $220,000 and/or a two-year prison sentence.

That list is for NSW, just noticed the first poster is from QLD. Can not find a similar list on the QLD EPA website.

Tassie

Gidday Tiger, sorry mate got a bit side tracked.
Go to this link. http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/ecoaccess/plants_and_animals/guidelines/
That is on the Enviromental Protection Agency site.
They handle all your permits and movement records.
Good luck with it mate.

Tassie
