Peregrine Falcon in Sydney CBD

A Peregrine Falcon was photographed by an office worker on the 45th floor of a Sydney CBD tower this week. The bird was resting on the ledge. Sydney City urban ecology manager Katie Oxenham said it was the first time she'd seen photos of the hunter in the Sydney CBD.

Ms Oxenham said peregrines were breeding in the city and it was an excellent habitat. They primarily feed on Feral Pigeons, common in the city.

See page 15 Sydney Daily Telegraph Wed Oct 19th 2011 for more details. Sydney CBD is already host to many former bushland birds including Pied Currawongs, Sacred Ibis, Australian Ravens and Sulphur Crested Cockatoos.

Interesting find. They nest in Collins Street up on buildings in the CBD of Melbourne so cities must be quite hospitable for them with the food being feral pigeons and in the case of the ones in Melbourne they also fly down to Altona to eat Quail.

Cheers, Owen.
