Yup, fantastic news. Sadly they also deferred on placing the Great Barrier Reef on the Danger list.

Love the description of the proposal as 'feeble', as that's exactly what it was. Now if only proper protection can be extended to the rest of the Tarkine...

It speaks volumes for the current federal government's attitude towards the environment that it wanted to log previously disturbed forest areas rather than ecologically restore them. Australia & it's economy can ill-afford such a wantonly vandalistic approach to its environment.

Unfortunately this decision will make the Not-So-Green camp in Tassie even more hostile towards environmentalists. Its a pity there has to be such polarisation on issues like this. Woko is right about the economy, but of course the NSG's use the economy as the reason to de-list. Its really a matter of the long-term economic, wider-environmental view versus the narrow short-term financial view. We read all the time about forests in SE Asia disappearing at very fast rates and no-one there seems to even consider re-afforestation (unless re-planting with palm oil plantations, coffee, rubber, etc). At least there are a few places in the world where natural forests are protected. But those places don't include the home of the loveable orang-utan and a few thousand other species on this earth. Its probably too late to save a lot of them.
