Bird in Mackay wetlands

This was taken in a rather dark area and we only got two photos (the others are worse). I was wondering about a brush cuckoo but am really stumped. anyone have any ideas?

Gday Meave, I reckon it might be a Little Shrike Thrush. They have that pale rufous wash, and pale pink / brown beak. I can't see the bird properly but that's just my guess.

I had a look at a little shrike-thrush, thought that the beak might be a bit too fat. We haven't seen one of those before. Thanks for looking at it for me, you will probably turn out to be right (again!!). Wish we had been able to get a better shot - it was fairly poor light, and of course the bird didn't co-operate. My book doesn't have a frontal pic showing the greyish tail.

Hi Meave,

I took a photo of a Little Shrike Thrush a couple of days ago. When I have time I'll post it later, but it shows the grey underside of the tail. I know that mine was a LST because I had a prolonged view at close distance, so a couple of (bad!) shots of mine might be a good comparison for you to look at, to see what you think.

It's exciting seeing new birds and figuring out what they are, isn't it? One of my favourite parts of birding.

Regards,
Andy.

Thanks Andy - yes, I do like trying to identify the birds, we do enjoy finding new ones - on the Mackay trip we found six that we hadn't previously seen, one was the Wompoo fruit dove which tried quite sucessfully to hide, but we could see enough to identify the red beak and red eyes, and the lovely purple breast and green wings - mostly bits in different pics, but still we will go back (when our 'new' secondhand car is finished with the bits we are putting on it) and try to get a proper sighting. Such a pretty bird but so good at hiding around branches. Also saw nutmeg mannikins, yellow honeyeaters (not good pics but see-able), plumed whistling ducks, and what used to be called Burdekin ducks, but are now apparently Rajah Shelducks. We have just bought a Falcon wagon (2007) and we are getting gas put on it - so much cheaper and our current Falcon runs so well on it, we had to put it on the new one. When that is all done we will be able to explore the country much less expensively. We want to find the Wandering Whistling ducks.

Meave, are you on facebook? If so, feel free to add me (my name there is Andy Kitt). I can show you my photos of the Little Shrike Thrush so you can see if they match your bird.

I have been on Facebook, the site got hacked into with nasty repercussions (made it look as if all sorts of messages were sent under my name) so have left it alone for some time. Have been back once - I guess I can try again. Thanks for the offer. I love as you say, trying to figure out what they all are, but know I'm not always right. I appreciate the help everyone is happy to give from this site.

Oh that's scary. Well if you do feel like going on fb again, feel free to get in touch and we can look at each other's bird photos.
