Identification request, Adelaide Hills

The other day I was riding my bicycle between Bridgewater and Echunga in the Adelaide Hills and as I passed a farm gate I saw a group of birds, on the ground, that I did not recognise, and have not been able to identify.

There were four or five of them together, black but smaller than a little raven, perhaps the size of an apostlebird, but with vivid red eye rings, or eye crescents.

Does anyone have any idea what they could have been?

Hi, they could have been white winged choughs there black with red eyes

Yes indeed, they could have been choughs with their red eyes but I got the impression, as I was cycling past them at some speed, that they had a bright light red ring or crescent around the outside the eye. Maybe it was an illusion.

Wow the red eye really is red isn't it. And large. I think you're right, I think they were choughs. The only place I've seen them before was in Omeo VIC. And it was the same kind of gregarious social group fiddling around on the ground.

Thank you!
