Nocturnal Bird, What is it?

Hi,
I live in wollongong, our backyard abuts a large area of nature reserve, on the group level there is a lot of scrub, there are a large number of mature gum trees and other native trees.

These birds are extremely loud (woke me up 6+ times between 12 and 4), they make a consistent 'squarking' sound and then at the end they change to a differnet quiter as if echo sound.

A number of the same bird have come to the area (or have only just started making noise) at night time. I know 100% that they are a bird because i heard the same noise today went outside and saw 2 or more of them.

When i say one today from afar the underneath of its tail feathers have a pattern browny in colour.

They are also not a small bird it was big, although more long than 'fat' like a seagull.

It sounds very much like a Channel billed Cuckoo with the behaviour and the way you describe the call. They look like a large seagull kind of.... the tail feathers are barred with a grey body. They do show as going south as far as where you are. As they are migratory from the New Guinea area they may only just now have reached your neck of the woods.

Cheers

I would suggest that if there was a way ( humane way that is) it would have been published here by now as many have gone before you with the same question!!! Look on the bright side... they will be gone after the Summer for another year!!
