Some kind of honeyeater?

Hi all!

I was at Melbourne zoo yesterday and spotted this bird while sitting having lunch. No, he wasn't in one of the enclosures...

I've only recently come to Victoria so I'm not much good at picking the birds I'm not used to. My best guess is that this guy is some kind of beautiful honeyeater? The crimson-red eyes must be a useful clue, but bird-finder and google weren't much help to me. Pardon the blurry photo, he was speedy.

Any guesses would be much appreciated!

Hi, Beruthiel, you are welcome, I'm sure that I don't have to guess that one, it's a beautiful "Eastern Spinebill" You will see more of them, if you stay in Victoria.

AHA! Thank you so much, Araminta. Now I feel silly for not knowing him - I'm sure we have them back in NSW, mum enthuses about them a lot. Guess I'd just never *seen* one before!

Don't feel silly,I saw a bird today, (very common here??), I had never seen one in my garden,a "Spotted Pardalote", they even have a nest in an embankment close to my door, I just hadn't noticed them before. The beauty of birdwatching, you can find something new every day.

You're so right. And it *is* an exciting part of moving states... the first time I saw red-rumped parrots I was so delighted! They look like little enameled jewels. :)

Just looked up Spotted Pardalotes, and they're sweet! Nice bird to have in your garden.
