You've certainly thrown up a challenge!
Second line in my bird book says "Collared Sparrowhawk - Difficult to distinquish from Brown Goshawk". :^)
The only difference I can find between the 2 birds is the CS has a square'ish tail compared to the BG which has a more rounded tail, but with all the photo's I looked at, the tail looks the same when the bird is perching.
Denis, I thought a sparrowhawk was a nankeen kestrel? I can't remember which of my books say that (and I don't have them with me at the present moment). Obviously a collared sparrowhawk is completely different.
Thanks Denis, I had called CSH in the field and was fairly certain thats what I had, but someone looking at the photo said 'mmmmm it could be a BGH' so I thought I'd post it for confirmation of my original ID. I normally use ACDsee it has a good photo editor and I had already done all you suggested and do it often to help ID.
Hi Denis
I have ACDsee6.0 and would recommend it. It is a very good file system and has plenty of add-ons that enable pictures to be edited and or adjusted very quickly and easily. It may not suit professional users, I am about to go DSLR and maybe I will end up shooting RAW some of the time so I may have to look at Photoshop or the like, I have Photoimpact 12 but find it cumbersome for quick edits/adjustments.

Photoshop....I can't live without it!
