kestrel?

Hi - I had a gorgeous experience in my garden on the weekend. On Saturday I went to get a peg out of the bag hand=ging on my washing line. I pulled out a rather large lump of mean - I thought it was probably a possum that dropped it. On Sunday I was sitting in my garden and 2 birds appeared and proceeded to go to the peg bag and toss on the ground several pegs. I was intrigued, they were obviously looking for the piece of meat. They didn't look too dissimilar to a kookaburra, but after looking at your website I believe it was a kestrel. I live in Melbourne. Any ideas?

Strange behavior for a kestrel, sounds more like a butcher bird

That would have been interesting to see!

I agree with Sparrow that the behaviour you described does sound like a butcherbird's behaviour. They often store their food in forks of trees, I think. But perhaps they don't mind clothes peg bags either!

Thank you for identifying the birds for me - I am a bit sad that they weren't baby kookaburras but I was delighted to watch them throwing my pegs on the ground - clearly they remembered where they had hidden their supper! Very clever.
