Kingfisher ID

Hi all,

This kingfisher was pictured on the Tweed Coast just outside of the Ukerebagh Nature Reserve. I know that this is one area where the Collared Kingfisher (vunerable in NSW) breeds but I need confirmation on its ID.

WhistlingDuck

The size of the bill is striking, it does look like a long solid bill, bigger than scared KF bill i think.

But there seems to be a tinge of buff around the forehead in the second image - indicative of a scared KF.

Once again, im not sure. Hopefully some one more skilled in bird id will confirm it for you.

Thanks WhistlingDuck,

I wish I got better pics and would have taken my time more. I brushed it off as a sacred but then I learnt that this is one of the few where the Collared Kingfisher breeds but from what I understand, not everyone has accepted the Collared as a seperate species. I think thats why its not listed on ebird.

I believe Collared Kingfisher is accepted by all as a separate species from Sacred Kingfisher. The reason you can't see Collared in eBird for Australia, is because eBird & other taxonomists have split the former subspecies of Collared Kingfisher in Australia from the Collared Kingfisher species found outside Australia.  eBird now call it Torresian Kingfisher in Australia.

As Whistlingduck said, the big bill looks good for Collared(aka Torresian) Kingfisher, but otherwise it's very hard to be sure from those photos.

Thanks Steven for that valuable insight
