Lewin's honeyeater?

I took this one at Oxley Creek Common the other day, just assuming that it was a Lewin's Honeyeater based on it's size and colour, but when I looked at home it looks a whole lot more yellow in the sun than I would expect of a Lewin's.

I know Lewin's are pretty common there, but not sure about other similar species.

Any thoughts?

Hi timmo, I am not sure. I was thinking perhaps a brown honeyeater? but from that angle I can't tell if it's beak is curved enough and can't see the small yellow patch near the eye.

Thanks Jackie,

I'm pretty sure it was larger than a brown honeyeater - about Lewin's size - but the angle is all wrong to be able to make out the head features that would identify it with certainty.

Timmo, it looks like a Lewins but the almost white colouring underneath has me baffled, I know that they have white under the tail area but I didn't think it extended as far up the body as your photo shows. I have a couple of photos of The Lewins Honeyeater that were taken at Oxley Common and they seem to be darker underneath. Your photo does show the thin yellow streak near the beak which the Lewins has. I will put up the photos and you can judge for yourself. Also the beak looks more slender on your example.

Thanks Shane,

The other one I considered in the book was a White-eared honeyeater, but I don't know too much about them.

They seem to be in the area, but I'm not aware of having seen one before, and again, the photo isn't great for identifying.

I'm sure it's a Lewin's, looks just like this one in my Pine tree, the one I posted yesterday.

It is very white and yellow.Have a look at my other post.

I would have said a Brown, just from the angle and shape plus th strong wing colouring. But it is difficult to tell. The best way would be to ask if you heard it's call....... we mostly recognise the lewins, and the browns are very vocal usually
