Magpies won the survey

Voted as Australia's number one bird (round 10,00 votes out of 50,000).  I agree, despite  a love for many beautiful native birds, like pardaotes robins and HEs, i love to watch magpies forage in family groups, they are intelligent, curious and friendly.

I'm curious about why so many people voted for the Australian Magpie.

Maybe all the collingwood supporters piled on !

I voted for Kookaburra, but I think magpie would be in my top 3 or 4. My guess would be that its a bird people in suburbs etc see in their backyards and have an affection for. Its easy to sense that magpies are intelligent birds, and the people appreciate their beautiful song.

Hmmm! I’m wondering if you’ve hit on something there, Whistling Duck. It would be a shame if the Australian Magpie won because voters’ experience of birds was limited to one or two common species which have managed to survive urbanization.
