Marsh Harrier attacks duck

At freezing Werribee Sewerage ponds yesterday. There were large rafts of Pink Eared Ducks, Shovellers, various Teals, and a small party of Marsh Harriers. The ducks all flushed as the Harriers approached, but one clearly didn't get the memo. We were not sure what was happening at first as the Harrier appeared to be standing on the water or some object in the water. It became clear that it had siezed the unfortunate duck by the head and was drowning it. Eventually the duck stopped struggling and the Harrier hoisted the sodden body out of the water and with tremendous effort carried it to a bank about 150 metres away where it dropped it. Nature red in tooth and claw, but Harriers have to eat.
