Nest builder ID ?

Inquiry from a different perspective .... What bird built this ?  Location is adjoining the Owens Walkway at Redhead Beach (NSW) 33°00'56.8"S 151°42'20.4"E

Possibly a Grey Shrike-thrush?

Agree with Steven, but it could also be a common blackbird (feral). They have a very similar looking nest. If blackbird is the culprit, I am sure you will see them, they're not timid usually, and if possible destroy the nest before they lay or before eggs hatch. Destroying the nest will eventually discourage them from breeding in your area.

Thanks Steve and Dale for your feedback. After listening on youtube to the song of the grey shrike thrush, my inquirer is convinced that is his nest builder, and the description/imagery fits perfectly as well. Question well answered. He is however a little concerned that this nest has been built on his verandah in response to his answering (whistling) in response. Disappointment for any bird seeking an actual partner ? cheers, Jon.

Glad to hear it was a Grey Shrike Thrush, certainly appears an unusual location, hopefully a partner can be found. Thanks for the update Jon.

I agree with a Grey Shrike-thrush nest. The Common Blackbird nest is similar in shape & size but the materials are roughly bound together with mud which I think is Blackbird spittle mixed with dirt.

As I recall there have been a couple of previous posts about Grey Shrike-thrush nests in plants on verandahs.

And I support Dale's suggestion about taking down any Common Blackbird nests before young are born. We don't want this introduced species competing with our native birds. Also, it's important to keep a watch on the nest site because Common Blackbirds will often rebuild a destroyed nest. I've had experience of a Blackbird nest being rebuilt twice.

A friend of mine had a GST do the same thing. Built in a pot plant on their veranda. He watched and photographed them all through the rearing of the chicks and they didn't seem bothered at all.

Following JonHeppell's interesting post above I found this nest a few days ago. It's certainly in a location which Grey Shrike-thrushes would choose but it has mud holding it together in parts. I'm interested in what Birds in Backyarders might think.
