A pair of Ospreys have made their nest on top of a mobile phone tower at Thornside, Qld. Couldn't see into the nest, though something was bobbing around up there, but this one was sitting under the top. Its a high tower and had a bit of competition with the glare from the sun with this one. Best we could do though.
They seem to be able to build their nests in the most unusual places. I guess when the very tall trees are scarce they make do.

I don't think this idea is new, but when they built this tower, they put a base specifically to attract the ospreys. The birds may have been living in the area a long time and people may not have wished to see them move on. Anyway, the birds nest there, on top of their tower, every year. I personally haven't seen the young, but I guess they must be successful.
And Shane, yes, the lack of tall trees makes it very difficult for birds. This tower is in a highly industrial estate.

No, not all doom and gloom, not this one, Woko. Apparently the pair of osprey have been rearing their young on top of this tower for years now.

Love the story Karen, and the photo. In Europe they have put up platforms on high poles for Storks for as long as I can remember, to keep them away from church steeples. (guess they didn't like the birds poop on the roof of the church, LOL). I think, birds don't care about anything, just want to build their nest up high.

Thanks M-L. As I said, the tower is in an industrial estate, and there is a lot of residential around it too. No tall trees are left, so this is all the birds have. They seem to be successfully breeding, so I guess they really like it. Without the tower, I think the birds would just move away, which would be sad. Where would they go? There isn't much left.

I wonder what the ospreys feed their young, given the location of the nest. Perhaps there's an opportunity here for someone to research the distance ospreys travel to obtain food for their nestlings.
Woko, I don't know what they feed on but this site is close enough to Moreton Bay that they could get there easily to feed.
