I was very pleased the other night to be out mountain biking at Mt Cootha and hear all 3 of the regular local owl species.
Early in the ride, I heard the woof,woof of a Barking Owl, then later the common Woot whoo of the Southern Boobook and finally the fake sounding call of a Powerful Owl.
It's really great to know that all our owl species are alive and well around the place.
That IS great news Tim. Where I live I haven't heard as many as last year, mainly Boobooks, and only once the Barking Owl earlier in the year. I do fear for them, as the DSE has cut down many trees behind us. The part of the bush behind us is leased by the Scout Movement, they run camps and are worried that old trees could fall on little Scout's heads. All in the name of ...you know what? Because I don't!? Shouldn't the DSE know how important dead old trees are?

That's awesome. Nothing beats a good owl story, even better when you see them! Have never heard a Powerful Owl, I'm making that my mission!
