The other day I was going for a walk near our shed when I heard some strange noises. Thinking that there was a rat in our shed I thought I would I would take a closer look and then I found these beautiful little birds. No rats just nesting Spotted Pardalotes ;0)

Aren't they just! Ever since I rescued one at work after he KO'd himself on the cyclone fencing I have loved these guys even more ;0)
You are lucky. Such a sweet little bird too. If you can get pics of the youngsters as they emerge, it would be fantastic to follow their progress.

A few days ago I heard a clicking sound coming from the gum tree in my front yard. I looked up to see about half a dozen small birds hopping about eating insects. At first I thought they were thonrbills, but then I realised they were pardalotes. I was very excited. :/

Well spotted, Jackie. I've seen striated pardalotes nesting in the air brick of the ANZ bank in Mt Barker SA. Their deposits would have been most welcome, I'm sure.

Just stuck my head in my Morcombe field guide & find that they nest June - January. Incubation takes 14 days. They usually produce 2 broods per season.

I have heard that sound as well , the pardalotes are cracking the lerps off the leaves and eating the insect under the waxy secretion .
Jackie how good is that , you must have a keen eye. Sounds like you don't miss much in your back yard.

Thanks for checking in M-L, as a matter of fact yes, the male was out collecting bark for lining and I saw both birds coming out of the hole ;0)
How close do you think you can get to them? Put up a chair and hide under a blanket with your camera, when they are not near and aren't watching.But try not to disterbe them. I'm not even there and get all excited. Good luck!

Good idea, I can get within 1-2m.
Only problem is I have to do it when the girls are asleep (I have a 21/2 year old an 8 month old) My 21/2 year old unfortunatly does not have an off switch or volume control!! She is happy to sing to the birds as loud as she can LOL

Just sit there, in a chair or on the ground. They don't care ,move in a little closer each time , you will see good luck. No you don't need that you found the nest!

Lately I've been hearing a high-pitched pip pip sound. I had a vague suspicion it might be a pardalote. Today I saw one gathering some nesting material, so I checked the BiB site for the pardalote call and sure enough it is what I have been hearing. Now my mission is to try and find out where they're nesting :-)
