Pied Stilts

I took these Stilts in the river near Longreach last year.  It appears they go under about 4 different names, Pied, White Backed, Black Winged and White Headed.  The naming depends on which country you live in as these birds are found world wide and maybe what you were told they were.  On some of the international sites an Black Winged Stilt has a white head and the ones found in OZ and NZ are Pied Stilts which seems to make more sense than the more common Black Winged Stilt name here in OZ.

Watching these birds feed I realized they neary always moved forward in a staggered line so I simply waited until I liked what I saw.  A good lesson learned why one should study the birds habits when taking photos.

The second image looks like the last stilt in line is a "tail end Charlie" looking out for any predators because the bird didn't keep the head down all the time like the other two birds.
