I saw this small bird walking along the waters edge at the Narrows in Mallacoota, Victoria. It was pecking at things on it's journey, and walked within 20cm of me. The body was the size of a grapefruit. Curved beak. Grey/pink toes. Top feathers patterned like fish scales. Bottom half of body speckled. I couldn't discern any wings, and it scurried away when I startled it.
Yes, bill is long and curved. No colouring on the head though, so doubt it's a lewin's rail. Also, patterns on feathers aren't quite right. Will try to upload a second photo.
I beleive that it is a Tawny Grassbird
my photo attached, hope that helps

Thanks Pacman that would be the one by the look of it.

Buff-banded Rail

The bill appears to be long, possibly a Lewin's Rail?
Getting close. Thanks for the suggestions.
