The Berowra Valley National Park is home to quite a few owl species, according to their literature, Powerful, Boobok, and another one that I have seen and heard the Lesser Sooty. Go and camp down there one night and hear the terrifying dive bomb scream of the lesser sooty. (well they might be terrifying if you didn't know what it was) I have and there was quite a lot of bird activity at night.
Many calls of day birds disturbed in their sleep.
There were never Lesser Sooty Owls in the Sydney basin.
If you follow the current IOC world bird list it seems the two Aussie sooties have been separated with the Sydney version being the Greater Sooty Owl (Tyto tenebricosa) and the northern sooty the Lesser Sooty Owl (Tyto multipunctata). However, some other recent literature has lumped the two together and we have T. tenebricosa tenebricosa in the south and T. tenebricosa multipunctata in the north.
In Sydney we have T. tenebricosa tenebricosa only.
