Proud moment - had to share!

Hi guys,

Just had to share a quiet moment of pride from yesterday. We live in Terrey Hills, where my girlfriend manages an equestrian centre of about 30 horses. There is an abundance of bird life, and I've been counting the species that venture onto the property (up to 46 now). Vicky had, I thought, always been just letting me do my own thing, taking a relatively solid interest but not really actively looking herself.

I was wrong!

I got home last night to find my Bird ID book out on the couch, not where I had last used it. Before I could ask about it, Vicky said excitedly, "I saw a bird we've never seen before today, I'm sure of it! It had a yellow ring around its eye and was a solid greyish colour underneath with different wings, was about the size of a pigeon, and flew up from the ground into a tree when I came close. Couldn't find it in the book yet, but I'll have another look now."

We sat down together and it turned out to be a Pallid Cuckoo, a new bird for the property --- and one I'm yet to see myself :/ haha!

She does love the yellow tail cockatoos, wedge tail eagles and lorikeets that stop by, but as I said, realistically I'd always figured it was more of a case of her being pleasantly patient while she indulged me going on about birds. But maybe more has rubbed off on her than I thought! Pretty stoked really. Her attitude and interest is in contrast to her co-worker, who responded, "Uhh...a bird?" when Vicky asked her what that was in the tree!

Cheers

Luke

The curiosity of others is attracted by the enthusiasm of the mysterious bird watcher.

The bird watching hook that snared me was when I saw a young zoology student, binoculars in hand, charge off along a beach excitedly yelling that there was a something or other species she had to see as it was the first time the species had been seen in the area for x years. I remember thinking "That must be something special for her to behave like that". From then on I was attracted to observing every bird that came within my field of vision.
