Sapling Pocket - an introduction and update

Some of you may know of Sapling Pocket which is on the Brisbane River a couple of km upstream from Kholo Crossing.  It adjoins  Corbould Land Trust site that contains some of the last remaining rainforest along Brisbane River.

We have prepared a guide that may be of interest, and can be found here:

Until a few years ago the pocket was used as a gravel pit but has since been taken over by the Ipswich City Council.  Before the 2011 flodds there were apparently plans to turn the gravel pits into playing fields and a recreation ground.  Damage to the area from the flood made the council revise their plans and a draft master plan can be downloaded from here:

A walk to the pocket this morning makes me wonder if even this plan will go ahead.  A recent minor flood has caused some damage to the council works and left a fairly deep erosion gully heading towards the river.  Some of the initial works included breaching the dam that held back an ephemeral lake.  Today there was still evidence that the most recent flood was close to 3m deep at the breach.

Anyway, on to the birds. A total of 133 species have been recorded in 26 visits - 13 visits by Marg and me.  The list can be found here : http://ebird.org/ebird/australia/hotspot/L2560357?yr=all&m=&rank=mrec

There are no facilities in the pocket and no drinkable water.  Please take your mobile phone and water to drink.  It is quite isolated and we have only ever seen one other couple there - a pair of botanists.

I'm happy to answer any questions that you may have.
