Can you please tell me exactly" how" you found the Owl? What told you to look where you did?

I often hear Owls around my place, but I can't find them.crying

Fantastic photosyes

Thanks, M-L. Just lucky, i was walking along when the owl flew out from a gum tree i was under (scared the crap out of me)

Anyway he (she) landed in a tree not far away so i took some pics, but it seemed a little uncomfortable with me so flew a little further away, so i took a couple more pics then walked away.

I really wanted to get closer to get better shots but the owl did not feel comfortable with me so i let it be.

Are you trying to tell me that with your bird count you don't have a Barn Owl?

Bloody brilliant luck!  What a magnificent bird - and in daylight to boot!  My DD & I searched for three hours this afternoon everywhere for any BOP's, all hiding, again crying Shoot some of that "luck" over the Strait please! smiley Great capture Shorty - what the heck sort of tree has it landed in?

Oh you lucky lucky ducky. And yes we all give a great big HOOT about this , totally jealous !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I must say I have only ever seen one of these (Barn Owls ) in the wild many years ago and that too was in daylight and way before i ever owned a digital camera. The only other Owl (Boobook) i have seen in the wild and in daylight was around this time last year where i did happen to have my camera on me cause i was out on a bush walk looking for none other than you guessed it ..birds. I only saw it cause it flew into the trees in front of me . My photos aren't no where as brilliant as yours Shorty but i blame my old point and shoot and also it was very high in the tree .Now I too have to be like Peter and find me a Tawny Frogmouth and a Barking Owl that isn't in captivity to mark off my list.

Marvellous stuff, we had a influx of them here in south west of WA but my sightings have been silver flash during the night

Great shots

Dont take life too seriously, it never ends well

JUST a Barking Owl!? I'll murder the next person who says that and appropriate their photos.

I love owls, but I never really see any. Just the odd Boobook at night that I can't get any photos of.

Did see a Powerful Owl once at Bungonia 6 or so years ago, but that was waay back in the era of Point and Shoot, so you can barely see the Owl in the photo frame.

So, I really like your photos!

Whoa there... Your owl is not a Barn Owl... it's a male Masked Owl (race novaehollandiae). Never have I seen a Barn Owl with such a dark colour on it's back! This is quite a significant find... definitely will get yourself mentioned in Birdlife mag. You should send those photos to them...

Hey, Araminta. Often a large gathering of incessantly-calling New Holland Honeyeaters & White-plumed Honeyeaters is a clue to the presence of a Boobook Owl at my place.

So I gather a Masked Owl trumps a Barn Owl, well done shorty, Peter will be doubly jealous now, if in deed it is a Masked, and I have no reason to beleive otherwise. That was my first impression, but I wouldn't know one from another, even if it bit me.

Interesting Woko, I know where this one liveswink Although it's a Boobook, it has lived in this barn for monthscheeky

(not many people do know, and I won't tell)

in Qld now and have just logged on; I was going to send you an email about the Powerful Owl but see that I don't need to; can you keep an eye on both owls until next weekend?  re: Barn Owl v Masked Owl - I just checked Eremaea and there are no recorded sightings of Masked Owl in the ACT
