Square Tailed Kite

I went for a bushwalk down Glenbrook Groge today, and sadly, didn't see much in the way of birdlife. However, when I was in a park in Leonay, a pair of Square Tailed Kites arrived and started harrassing the local birdlife.I was really chuffed to see them, I have never seen a Square Tailed Kite before. Anyway, there does seem to be a lot of sightings for them on Eremaea in the Lapstone/Leonay area, and thus I think the pair I saw are probably resident in the area. If you're looking to see one, it might be worth checking the area out if you were passing through, as it does seem prime habitat for them. Also, there's a train station at Lapstone, from which the area can be easily accessed.

Hope someone finds this useful!

Just so you know, around the Bundaberg area, we have at least two breeding Square-tailed Kite pairs... not telling where so to protect the birds. If you are visiting Bundaberg and want to know, I can send a message.

I assume Glenbrook Gorge & Leonay are in NSW, Lachlan.

Whoops, sorry, I thought I said where they were.

Yes, they are in the Lower Blue Mountains. Glenbrook Creek drains out of the mountains and has created a rather impressive gorge just above where it meets the Nepean River. If you ever take from Sydney up into the mountains, it is the gorge on the left as you rise up into the mountains.

Thanks for the offer Ihewman. It must be really special to have a pair of raptors like those nesting near by. You must have had to go through a lot of work to find where their nest is; I've been trying to locate that of the local pair of Wedgies, with no luck.

Thanks, Lachlan. I always find it useful to know where sightings have occurred.
