For almost 4 days now, there have been two young trilling, and trilling, and... non stop. They start at about two hours before dawn, and stop when all the other birds start their morning songs.Unfortunately I'm NOT good at finding them, and I can't go into the next door property. (he has a gun!)Yesterday morning I heard the trilling very close again, and thought I could hear the adult landing on the roof, or hunting from the roof. So, I went outside with my torch. I had no idea about what was going to happen. I had heard them scream before, but this was more like screaching , the parent was VERY angry, I swear, I could feel it fly past my head.I just said, sorry bird.... and went back inside. I'm happy they are there, I won't bother them again, by trying to find them. To tell you the truth, I won't tell anyone that they are there. I have heard them for years, and hope to hear them for many, many more.M-L

Hi ML
Are you sure they're Barking Owls trilling? It's a little early for them to fledge as they are after Powerful Owls normally, which should be about now.
I wish I lived close, I'd check 'em out with you. :-)
Well Akos , we have both, I'm not 100% certain, do both their young have the same begging call? I thought the trilling was only made by the Barking Owls?? I do hear the screaming very often at other times of the year.We have so many Owls, there is one, that often screames similar to a BOP flying over, I do think that might be a Barn Owl. I have listened to so many recordings, but the only one, apart from the S Boobooks, I'm sure of is the Barking Owl. ( no question, as I said before, unless there are "Jack Russels"in the trees!) Please tell me,do Powerful Owl Young trill similar ? Then again, I do not have to know, I am just so happy they are there! M-L

Me again Akos, I listened to some more recordings. You are most certainly right, the soft, single hoot definitely sounds like the female Powerful Owl, but the juvenile begging is much softer than in the recordings of either one.I find the trilling in the recordings much shriller(if there is such a word?) Could there be a certain range in the calls? Were would I find the most accurate recordings? M-L
