Black Cockies

Hi everyone, back from NZ where I did see a few interesting birds.
I was so excited when getting back to work after my holidays I was lucky enough to see ( & hear!!) a flock of approx 35 white tail black cockatoos flew over the stand of very tall gum trees across the road from my office. They were noisy and obviously on the way somewhere and just stopped off to tear a few trees apart before following the others, what a great sight and sound spectacular! It was the largest group of them I have seen since being on the Sunshine Coast, and I understand from locals that sights like that were quite common some years ago before development chopped their trees down in and around the fringes of Buderim.

Hi to all. This is my first time on the forum. Absaloutely love all things birds. Black cockies are one of my favourites, especially the red tails. As I live in an inner suburb of Perth, we dont get a lot of black cockies in here, and when we do, they are usually white tails. So imagine my suprise when I discovered that the small flock in the large ghost gum out the back,(which I assumed were white tails and ignored) were actually red tails!!! They sat in the tree squawking and destroying branches for a couple of hours! it was fantastic.

Hi ewoklily

Aren't they just beautiful? We used to live in Roleystone and had plenty of tall Jarrahs and redgums in our bush block. The red tails were a regular feature and they used to shred the ends of the branches and make a huge mess all over the front drive. Our neighbours actually used to complain about them and their mess. i'd give anything to have it now!!
They came back yesterday to work and did a big circuit around the suburb then settled in some tall gums not far away. Maybe they are coming for a particular flower that is out now or gum nut ? I hope they stay for a while.
