Could it be a WedgeTail???

I came to a halt at the traffic lights at Padstow & Logan Rd about 15Ks from Brisbane city centre. A pair of magpies fly east to west, overhead, with that authoritative call and power in their wings, which generally signals that they are going to sort something out.

I look to my left where the magpies are heading and another five or six birds are flying in from the north-west, they are high in the air, perhaps at 35~40 meters, and very agitated. Now the squawking and alarm calls get louder. I can hear Magpie Larks, Magpies, Crows and Noisy Miners.

Then above the block of Units rises a really large black bird, less than 50 meters from me. It was doing tight circles to gain altitude. The bird had that BoP broad wing with five or six distinct flight feathers at the wingtip. It had a huge wing span, appearing to be 4 or 5 times the span of the magpies and crows, which continued to harass it.

I was gobsmacked.

I took photos with the Mobile phone but, as you can see, the settings were all wrong.

I have seen Wedge-tail Eagles out west some years ago and recently at the NT Wildlife Park . This looked like a Wedge Tail but maybe a little too small and a little too black to be one. I had seen a similar huge black bird (from many Ks away) circling over the Karawatha Forrest reserve last winter. I would love to think it was a Wedgy. Has any one else on Brisbane’s south side seen it. If it is not “the eagle”, any thoughts, guys on what it might be?
