After not being seen in Sydney for 104 years, a ground parrot was discovered in Malabar, in the eastern suburbs in 2006. Rescuers took it in for care following a dog attack.
The obvious questions - where did it come from? Was there really a local population getting by for 104 years surrounded by suburbia without being detected? Was it an escaped captive? Or did it fly in from Barren Grounds (100km south)?
Now - two years after the first, a ground parrot sighting has been made by volunteer bush regenerators - again in Malabar.

Thanks for the info. Interesting indeed.

I had heard of the first bird but didn't know a second had been sighted - that is brilliant!
Ground parrots are one of my favourite birds ever since I got to release a banded individual at Barren Grounds.
Hi Holly,
yes - it was only recently.
I suppose on paper it was "only" a sighting, and therefore not clear evidence of the species persisting, but imagine if this is true - in a tiny isolated pocket this ground-dwelling parrot has eked out an existence alongside dogs, cats and foxes for over 100 years - without being spotted, no less!
