King Parrot Surprise

Hi, I'm a new member, living near Kyogle in NSW,planting everything to attract anything native in my ex cow paddock yard. I am very happy to report that King Parrot families have begun to visit the fruiting Syzigiums I have planted.

I have also discovered that when the Koel visits he is very fond of eating the ripest mulberries, leaving only the unripe ones for the rest of us.I am happy to share I just have to be a bit quicker to the tree in the mornings.

G'day Vicky and welcom to the site. I also live near Kyogle(but please don't hold that against me)and some of the locals around here call these Koels Storm Birds or Mulberry Birds. Another good thing to attract King Parrots is Sunflowers. Ray

Hi Ray and thanks I'll definitely plant some sunflowers.

I get a little confused with the local names of birds, Isn't the black headed cuckoo shrike also known as the 'storm bird'?

I'm a new 'local' so I've a lot to learn, but kean to do so.

I have neighbour who has a real hatred of crows and actually gets a shooter in to discourage them. Is this legal? Vicky

I have never heard the Black-faced Cukoo-shrike called a storm bird but that does not make it not so. Storm Bird is a name given to several birds, I think it may be because these birds are more noticeable during the storm season. The Coucal makes a whooping noise during spring and summer and the Koel makes his presence Known about the same time and both of these birds are locally known by some as Storm Birds. Ray
