A few weeks ago as I walked down my street I noticed a group of about 5-6 Little Wattlebirds fluttering over the power lines and landing in the street trees on both sides of the street. Is the normal, I have never seen more than 2 of this species together not 5-6.

There is a seasonal change going on. Lots of thing happen now which might not happen once birds have paired off, and established their territories. In between, lots of young males fancy their chances.
That gives several possible explanations, I think.
Good observation on your part, and good to have it recorded.
