Magpies in spring

At this time of the year magpies get a lot of bad publicity because of the many attacks on humans that are reported. Just this week I saw a feature on television about the weird and wonderful creations made and worn by pedestrians and cyclists for protection from attacking magpies. However, this afternoon I had a different experience. I was digging weeds in my back lawn and became aware of a magpie walking around quite close to me. It came so close that I could have reached out my hand and touched it. No fear of, or aggression towards me, just a curious look to see if I was digging up worms or grubs that it might eat. Following the pattern of past years, later in spring I expect the parents to bring their offspring to my backyard to teach it/them to find their own food. An open compost heap in the corner is also an attraction for this family. It made my day.

I've had fun watching the magpies + juveniles for the past couple of months (breeding early here). Their behaviour is just amazing. I get very upset when I hear people speak bad of these birds or worse, try to hurt them.
