Does anyone know what this bird is doing?
This photo was taken in my backyard where a Crimson Rosella was sitting on a sprinkler (that my grand-father made).
It repeatedly bent down and pressed its beak against the pipe of the sprinkler. It turned around and did it over and over. Seemed very strange.

Great shot .... who knows why they do such strange antics.... if you watch lorikeets and cockatoos for long enough you will see similar idiosyncratic stuff I think. Maybe it was waiting for it to turn on.... perhaps one day it did it and the sprinkler was turned on at the same time.... a learned behaviour? :)

There has to be an other reason for the Crimsons to do this?! I have been watching them , not just the odd one. They do it, when they are picking up seeds.I would like to find out why.Only the Rosellas do it, King Parrots dont!There has to be a purpose ?

Thanks for everyone's thoughts, I thought perhaps Araminta might be interested that there were some sunflower seeds near by, but I don't think it ate any until after its performance.
I have included a close-up pic below, it appears to have some cobweb or something on its head? ...and just for my info, how can you tell the gender of a Crimson Rosella?

Lovely shots Roger, I did read that they had a very strong sense of smell maybe that has something to do with it?
My S&D says that the female has a white under wing bar, and I gather that we can't see that in your pic.
