Pheasant Coucal

The Pheasant Coucals are whooping in the early mornings again , that means if won't be long before the Koels are back !!!! Can't believe another season has come and gone !

Yes birdie, I saw a pheasant coucal in my yard 2 days ago.

I noted on another thread that I have already heard the Koel this year. In fact I have been hearing them almost every day now since 7 Sept.

I am in SE Qld.

That is great Scorpios13 I love the Koels call ...can't wait for them to arrive here. I just love going through the different seasons and now, after 3 years of bird watching I know them all and when they come and go. The more I watch and listen the more I am finding ..... for me the highlight of the season was finding the rose Crowned Fruit dove in my garden... that is a new one for sure. I am used to the Catbirds and they are in full swing now at dawn getting ready to produce another brood this summer ( 3rd year running). It is so interesting to see all the different behaviours

As you are both in QLD, do you think the floods may have had a positive effect on the numbers and types of birds this season?

We are in Logan just south of Brisbane - we have tried (often) to get a picture of a pheasant coucal, but the clever things just charge off into the undergrowth, so we have only got blurry pics and not a clear sight of one at all, except a few weeks ago near Bundaberg we saw one on a farm fence which I swear grinned at us as we passed - there was no-where to turn around, and he would have been gone anyway. I would love to see one properly for a change.

Hi Meave, they are interesting birds for sure. Here is a link to a previous post I did when I got a couple of pics across the road. I have a few good ones taken on my fence by the pool too

I am not really sure about the rains etc Qyn...maybe Holly would be in a better position to comment on that. I haven't noticed birds locally in any greater number.
Have you recently become interested in Birds? If so that could be the answer .... you notice them more once yo start looking ..that is all I can suggest .

It is a life long interest Birdie, but first time on a birding forum. I have noticed in people's posts and media that breeding behaviour and night calling seems to be earlier in the season than usual.

I'm from Melbourne where we also had floods although not as widespread as in QLD and mention has been made that increased water has meant increased insect activity leading to increased insect eater food. I was just curious as to whether it was evident to bird observers in QLD. Thanks for your response.
