Powerful Owl "hearing"

I say "hearing" as opposed to sighting, as I didn't actually see a powerful owl, but heard it.

I was out last Thursday night on a night mountain-bike ride with a mate. We heard what sounded a lot like kids making owl noises, and my mate suggested that that was what it was, but I was sure it was too regular. I knew it wasn't either of the main suburban owls we get around here - the Southern Boobook and the Barking Owl.

A quick listen to the MP3 on the site here confirmed it as a Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua), which was exciting for me. There's a big sign right near that location saying "Home of the Powerful Owl", but I'd never seen or heard one up till now.

Out of curiosity, which city are you in? What suburb? Lane Cove perhaps?

Hi Akos,

I'm in Brisbane, and it was in the Gap Creek area at the back of Mt Coot-tha.

It's an area of bushland about 7km West of the city, that connects through to Brisbane Forest Park and large areas of bush outside the city.

Cheers
