Rufous whistler mimicry

At the moment we have a fair number of rufous whistlers around the place, either that or the same one keeps following me about. I have been impressed by their vocal mimicry, as well as their normal "whipbird" call the have been mimicing various birds around the place. They do a very good yellow-faced honeyeater as well as cuckoos, crimson rosellas, treecreepers and various other birds. I have been watching as they do these calls. It makes it a bit hard when I use calls to locate and identify birds, though it is very impressive and fills the place with their song.

Hi, Don. I'm interested to learn why you would like to download bird sounds.

You can hear bird sounds on the app Michael Morcombe & David Stewart's eguide to Australian Birds.

You can listen to bird calls online at http://www.xeno-canto.org/

This website also has calls associated with each species. Link below

Showing my age here but isn't that bird sound part of the beginning of the sixties TV show Skippy?  Very iconic bush sound.

Hi campbellvn

Whats interesting about the Whipbirds call is that it is often 2 birds calling one after the other.

The male does the Whip like sound and then if a female is nearby she will often respond straight away with a quick "chew, chew' like sound.

In fact she responds so quickly, it often sounds like it is the one call.

See if you can hear the two calls.

Elizabeth - you comment made me laugh, I know what you mean. - showing my age to.

I heard Eastern Whipbird today, at the Bidjigal Reserve, northwestern Sydney, I would have loved to have seen it, but hearing it was pretty good.

Hi Elizabeth thank you. Yes would be great to see it especially where we live. We hear lots of cute Kookaburras and other birds like Sulphur Crested. I thought when I first heard them a neighbour had an avery. Boy did they make a racket. later I went for a walk and spotted them in a Large gum tree chatting, squawking and generally playing around. I do not like birds kept in cages although I know as companions they are a great pet especially if they talk. Another bird I like is beautiful Major Mitchel. They are also characters. I was given a baby as a present years ago. He wasn't really sociable except for me although he liked to chew on me. Sadly I had to go away for a while . The people taking care of him didn't close the door on his avery. He got out never to be seen again. Have a great day. cheers Don PS if you have any interesting pictures to share please send
