Here are some rather poor images of a delightful bird, the Sacred Kingfisher.
I returned from a week away to hear reports of this bird being spotted in Turrella Reserve. There have been records over the years but it hasn't turned up during any of my monthly surveys in the last half year, nor any of my casual visits (weekly).
The kingfisher has been seen here every day for over a week and seems unperturbed by a busy walkway and even a rock band rehearsing nearby!
The kingfisher continues to frequent this location.
I returned on a sunntday thinking the light would show up the glorious colour of the feathers better than my first attempt (overcast afternoon) but this is the result:
Disappointingly pale.

Here's a different kingfisher, photographed at Xmas time.
Check out the size of that meal!
I suspect that's a black prince cicada. After it flapped and buzzed for a while the bird managed to scoff the lot!

I've recently sighted this beautiful bird in Yarra Bend Park on the Yarra River only about 8km's from the CBD!!!
