In this photo you can clearly see, how and why the Australien Magpie "walks", and doesn't hop with it's legs parallel. The Magpie has a short thigh bone (femur), and long lower legs below the knee. Those legs are suited to walking, rather than running, although , when hunting prey, you can observe them running in short burst.
(I said this somewhere else before, but had no photo to demonstrate, what I was talking about)

Thanks for sharing that info M-L. They love walking across lawns. I find it funny to see Lorikeets hopping around and they are hopeless on the ground.
