collared sparrowhawk in Footscray

Hi birdos, just thought you might be interested to know that today (16th Sept, 2009) a collared sparrowhawk landed in my little courtyard garden in Melbourne's industrial western suburbs (Footscray). It had caught a baby bird (that I couldn't identify - must have pinched it from a nest), plucked off it's feathers and devoured most of it before being startled and taking its find and flying off. I've never seen one before, of the native birds in my garden I mostly see silver-eyes, some magpies, the cockies that like the palm trees around here, and some very noisy rainbow lorikeets that stop in to check out my flowering gum. Love to know if other people have seen them in such environmentally barren places. I suppose they're getting desperate and having to hunt in unlikely places. cheers folks, Liz.
