cuckoo

Hi All,I have been listening to a very annoying bird lately and have just discovered it is a cuckoo and the mother is a crow and from what i have seen she has her work cut out for her, cheers

Tassie

Gidday Tessb,Your not wrong they do have their work cut out for them I feel sorry for them but I suppose thats nature.
We have them here in the summer months and they are bloody noisy they are active of a night to which makes them popular.
Cheers
Tassie.

G'day Tess, enjoy them whilst they are here. The Cuckoo's are a very interesting group of birds. We get quite a variety of different ones from the large Channel-billed Cuckoo, to the little Shining Bronze-Cuckoo, to Koels, Friarbirds, Drongos, and Cuckoo-shrikes to name just a few.
From what I can tell, most of them lay their eggs in the nest of a certain species of bird, so spotting them and their young is made easier if you know the name of the host bird.
Anyway, they'll all be heading north again in a few short months, and then we'll all be listening intently again next September for the sound of the first Koel as it arrives, marking the start of a new breeding season!

Today I also sighted a cuckoo at my place (which is quite rare). It was still juvenile and made harsh rasp-like shrieks begging food from its host (a Pied Currawong), even when young they are quite noisy. It was a young channel-billed cuckoo and I never seen one of those before! They have a very nice beige-ish plumage in it's youth but when it grows older it has a dirty greyish plumage blarg.
I love Koels, they have a nice plumage both the dark male and ornate, brown female. Their loud calls and carols are very nice too but sometimes they just call out too much that it gets very annoying.
Cuckoos are fascinating birds but also very cruel to others :(
