eastern bristlebirds and glossy black sightings

I know this site is for birds in backyards, but I am stretching the definition of "backyard"! And asking for some help. I have only just returned home after some time away (about 18 months). In the past, I used to notify National Parks in Canberra about sightings of rare and endangered species. But I can't find the contact anymore and an email to the Dept of Environment got no response at all.

I know that it is possible to register as a contributor to the Birds Australia database, but I am a casual observer only and it takes itself a bit seriously for someone like me!! (So did the National Parks people, but after a few phone calls to me asking for GPS coordinates, they accepted that I couldn't give such and noted only the location as described using local landmarks).

So - recently I have noted two Eastern Bristlebird sightings in my local area, and a pair of glossy black cockatoos which may have been nesting because they were chasing a raven.

I would very much like to report these sightings because the land around here is constantly under threat of development and it is important to have sightings of such species on the record.

Does anyone know of a contact I can email these sightings to (along with details of where they were)?

Gidday JC, I can certainly relate to your frustration with Gov Depts.
What I would do if I was you is don't mess around with the lower levels of the Department of Enviroment and Heritage, instead shoot an email of to the Ministers office outling your concerns and lack of response.
Trust me it works !!
All of the ministers email addresses are on the internet.
I am sure you will get steered in the right direction.
Let us know how you go.
Cheers
Tassie.

Hi JC,

Email me at

I know some people who did research on Eastern Bristlebirds (one did translocations so I would be interested to see if they are birds in that area). I can certainly ask them who you should contact.

please keep trying with your local Parks & Wildlife (or equivalent in your state) I'm in Tas. and recently spotted a white cockatoo in distress - one email sent over the weekend was responded to first thing monday and passed to several others in the same department all trying to help out with info. and when seeking information on the Blue Billed Duck also in my region, I had an excellent response from Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife - I've walked all of Tasmania's National Parks many times and have the greatest regard for the rangers and the information and support they provide - please don't give up - send another email - I'm sure it will pay off - good luck!

Thanks all

One way or another I will get these sightings recorded.

Hi JC

I know there was a NSW NPWS survey for reporting sightings for Glossy Blacks in the Kangaroo Valley/Barren Grounds and south coast area (of NSW).

I don't have the details but I figure that if you go to the NPWS website and search within it,for Glossy Black Cockatoo you will probably find something.

Failing that, there are people on Kangaroo island (SA) who are studying them there. contact them and ask for the name of someone in your State who would be the relevant person to report your findings to.

Cheers

Thanks everyone. I found a contact at NSW Dept of Environment and Climate Change. They are happy to take reports of sightings and pass the info on to the Wildlife Atlas.

If anyone else is in the same boat, email the information to Department of Environment & Climate Change (NSW)
