Walkabout Creek.

It sounds like somewhere in western Queensland or the NT but this is actually only 12 kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD in fact the address is 60 Mount Nebo Road The Gap.

I read about it last week and decided to have a sticky beak yesterday. Great spot and will be going back again. www.walkaboutcreek.com.au

I missed a couple of species, I just wasn’t quick enough, Red-backed Fairy-wren and an Azure Kingfisher but I’m quite pleased with some that I did get. Those Miners are tricky to see even when they are in the tree above you. The first two aren't the best photograph but I think these were Yellow-throated Miners?

What a fantastic new spot you have found Reflex!  I love those Butcherbird shots, and the Robin and Fantail look like they were posing for their photo shoot, such inquisitive little looks.  I'm no expert, but I think your first bird may even be an Olive-backed Oriole perhaps?

edited to add:  Or maybe not smiley the bottom of the tail doesn't quite match my guide.  Sure someone more experienced will be able to give a less vague reply than me.

The butcherbird was a great find and a very obliging subject allowing me to keep following it for about 1/2 an hour and landed in some nice sunny spots. I suspect it wasn't that old to be honest.  I missed a great opportunity with the Kingfisher by trying to get too close. I might have to go back and try again next week-end.wink

I have just had a look at some photographs of an Oriole and I think you could be right about it being an Olive backed Oriole. The only reason I searched under Miner was because there was plenty of them about at the time "pinging" away to each other but this bird didn't have the orange around the eye like a Bell Miner.

It sounds like a lovely place to go birdwatchingsmiley Lovely photos, I really love the last one of the Grey Fantail.

The Olive-backed Orioles are often mistaken for other birds. They are really good at mimicking other birds, one time I heard one mimic a pacific baza, and then the warning call of the noisy miner! They are a fascinating birdsmiley

Great collection of photos and sightings.

Love your first yellow robin photo and the fantail shots.

That is was what was happening! The whole area was full of bell miners. If the birds didn't move you couldn't find them even though they were pinging away above you.surprise

Great photos, I've seen an Olive Backed Oriole before, I love their colours.

Useless aside: the Walkabout Hotel from the Crocodile Dundee was actually the McKinlay Hotel between Winton and Cloncurry.

The pics are definitely of Olive-backed Oriole - orange beak, olive head & speckled body. Orioles are generlaly not in large numbers and from your description I am wondering if there were Bell Miners above you that you did not see. The 'pinging' comment suggests Bell Miner.

Correct pacman. I have edited my previous response to Elsie. They were Bell Miners.
