Water Birds Return

Following recent good rain water is now collecting in the bottom of local dams on the s.e. slopes of the Mt Lofty Ranges in SA. This water as well as the pasture growth has seen the first water birds, Australian Wood Ducks, reappear after a long absence of water birds of any description due to dry conditions.

Because of serious destruction of wetlands & relatively large bodies of water small farm dams can play a role in conserving water birds. However, much remains to be done to vastly improve the quality of habitat in & around these dams to increase the diversity of water bird species.

Meanwhile, Canberra has seen a significant decrease in waterbirds following the rains after they all decided that they preffered to go down your way

I look forward to their arrival, Ryu.

Usually, there's dispersal of water birds after rain & concentration during the dry season or in dry periods. Much of the water at Kakadu has dried up if my son's recent photos are any guide. I'll be interested to hear from him about water bird concentration after his return.
