As for the identity of your bird, I don't know but it looks rather like a species of quail although it seems a bit large for a quail. There's probably someone on Birds in Backyards who can be more helpful. If not, the Victorian Quail Breeders Association or whatever Google produces with a similar name might be able to help with identifying or perhaps eliminating it as a quail. The Melbourne Zoo might also be able to help if you email your photo to them. Whatever, it's best if it's not left to roam the wilds of Mt Waverley as it's almost certainly an exotic species & the less we have of those in the environment the better for our native birds.
sorry but copy/paste doesn't work on this pc on this site for me; previous thread was in 8/12, wow times flies when you are having fun; use the search function above
Thanks ! I found the other thread and it's definitely the same bird. I wonder what a Chukar Partridge is doing in Melbourne suburbia... probably a lost pet? Anyway, being a non native bird is there anything I should do in the unlikely event it returns to my backyard?
What area is your backyard in?
M-L
Mount Waverley - Melbourne
Chukar Partridge, an introduced bird, do a search on this site as there was a thread about 6 months ago when 1 was seen in Sydney

yes, catch it and then google for your local poultry club who may be able to refer you to someone who keeps them
