What kind of bird is this? Nests on ground.

This bird has built it's nest in our driveway, it is a small bird, about 10cm. It's eggs are motely and speckled. It will try to lure you away from it's nest by pretending to have a broken wing. It's wings look to be bent on the same kind of angle as a seagulls when it flys. I've attached a picture of the bird and it's nest, I hope someone can help! I would really love to find out what kind of bird this is!

Hi zoourq,

I think that's a Black-fronted Dotterel. A ground-nesting species in the plover family.

Cheers

I'm keen to find out where your driveway is located, zoourq. Is it near a dam or wetland?

The nest is about 300m from a small dam and in two paddocks over there is a running creek, hope this helps! :)

Thanks Tim! It does look like a black fronted dotterel and the description matches what I know about this bird!

I thought that something like that might be the case, zoourq. I suspect the dotterels chose your driveway because their eggs would be camouflaged among the stones. In view of your respect for their eggs they chose well!
