Where are the Willie Wagtails?

We’re down to a solitary Willie Wagtail at our place on the south eastern side of the Mt Lofty Ranges in SA. Numbers have been sinking for some years & I did hear that the Willie Wagtail is fast becoming another of our endangered, even extinct, woodland birds. At least in the Mt Lofty Ranges.

I’m wondering what Birds in Backyarders are observing in their necks of the woodlands.

They are all in Sydney! :-) We still have plenty of them here - in fact ubiquitous, they are on just about every bird survey I've done.

Thanks for the observation, Alex. Perhaps the massive destruction of the natural environment in the Mt Lofty Ranges is a factor in my neighborhood. There’s scarcely room for any living thing to move so close are the thousands of houses covering the landscape.

Hi Woko, can report that we see plenty on our travels. Love the way they flit around me picking up the insects I disturb as I walk.

Thanks, Sue.

I've spent most of this year travelling around Victoria birding and i can say, happily, that Willi Wagtails are usually present across most of the state. Sadly, you may have a local environmental issue at play there.

That sounds awful Woko. I travel a lot to country Australia for work (building solar farms) and the extent of land clearing is appallingly evident from the air. When you throw drought and climate change on top of that, and the depredations of feral cats, its pretty tough for the small natives out there.
