I took these on Saturday morning just before the heavens opened and dumped about 50mm of rain. You can see the drops of rain that had landed on the gate.
500mm only.

Nice photos Reflex - do you use the extender a lot?
Those herons have a lot of different poses extending, contracting and twisting their necks.
Delightful set of poses Reflex. The composition with the damp gate really added some extra interest too, for my money anyway. It was almost as if it was contemplating strolling along it. "Could I? Well, should I?.... Nah...."
Nice shots, Reflex. They are a very common bird but you just never know what pose they will give you, very photogenic.

No not a lot and hardly ever on my 70D body because it won't auto-focus with the 2x but it does with the 1.4X..
Once I'd taken some photo's and whilst the Heron was prepared to stay on the post I put the 2x on to avoid trying to get closer. You know that feeling when you just know if you take another step closer it will be off, well I was at that point and the bird was making preparations for a take-off.
I like the way it put the background out of focus more than with the lens only. I also played about with different shutter speeds to see the difference in results. But then the heavens really opened up and the bird took off and I bolted for cover.

Thanks for the info Reflex ... food for thought as I don't have an extender.
