White-winged Choughs

Ms Woko were driving on Paech Rd on the outskirts of Mt Barker this afternoon when we were required to slow down due to the presence of 4 white-winged choughs on the roadside. This is quite remarkable because developers have been ridding the Mt Barker area of choughs & other bird species for some time now. On the opposite side of the road there's a plantation of Eucalyptus trees which might be providing habitat for them.

I can tell you, Ms Woko & I were really chuffed by our sighting of these birds which are surviving, so far, in spite of the best efforts of the developers.

They can do well around mans urban sprawl,I work at a building site, which became Australia Wonderland they stay on there for many years. Many Factorys are built there now,I wonder if they got a job?
The local magpies were always dive bombing them, the White -winged choughs would make hell of a lot of noise but would stay close together , they just kept on scatching the ground and eating.
I think the Magpies did it for fun.
What a show!

The Cumberland plains vegetation is disappearing fast as urban sprawl spreads across the basin, and nature will hang on to any patch of ground. That's one spot I have overlooked and I have not seen an Apostlebird in that area either Beef. Pine cemetery and A.W.L as the crow fly is not that far. Let's hope only dead people move in ! I read the factsheets thanks .

Nurragingy Reserve in Doonside is another place for Apostlebirds too. I photographed them at Pine Grove a few years back. It's about time I revisited the site I guess. Pretty cool stuff really.

Yes I have seen them at the reserve too (a few years back now). Very cool birds, a lot of fun to watch.
