Went out yesterday, even though the sun was out the air was crisp and cold . Hadn't been to Canning River for a while so decided to spend a few hours there and see what was out and about. There wasn't alot to photograph , anything that was , was either too high in the trees or too far away for my camera to focus.
The only bird that I did manage to get in camera distance of was this White -faced Heron busy looking for food in the shallow pools of water.
Seeing I have taken many photos of this bird species before I wasn't that anxious to go through my photos when i came home.
With 5 minutes to spare I did have a little look at them today and was suprised to see how lovely the winter colours had come out in the photos. I have recently started to crop alot of photos but with these ones I really didnt feel the need.
I see what you mean, really lovely range of colouring.
Can see the birds intent as well, love the third. Thanks.
Just love the colours in these Shoop. Great work!
Lots of lovely shades of colours there.
Not sure if its a trick of the light, but that WF heron seems to have much more of a white head than the ones i see around sydney. The ones here have grey on top of the head, and not so much white going down the front of the neck.
Yes lovely Winter colours in these shots Shoop..... they are a common bird but always worth a look when they are poking through the shallows like that aren't they? I think it is just the light that makes the face look whiter WD

Here is another photo of the same bird ( I have cropped it alot so you can see there is just a small amount of grey further back on its head).
After looking through alot of my other White-faced Heron photos i have taken from other dates , most of them do only have a small amount of white on their faces with alot more grey on top .
This photo here is the only other I could find taken June of last year, with alot of white on its head. Chances are it could be the same bird as it was taken at the same location. As you can see this is what most of the Herons are like with the grey starting at the crown of the head and going down around the eye.

Thanks Shoop. I don't think its a young one, as my bird book says the juveniles have reduced white face. It is an attractive looking variation with the extra white on the head. Maybe you have discovered a colony all with that variation!
You second new photo is really lovely with the heron against that background with the soft dark pinks.
