it seems to have a mannikins beak but my search couldn't help with anything definate although there was a reference how 2 different types of Mannikin have been known to inter-breed and create variations, but there are folks here who will be much more qualified than me. Sorry can't help further.
the bit of olive colouring on it has me thinking red-browed finch, but normally the red stands out more so and the dark bill on yours when the red-browed finch has a red one. Maybe the lighting has made things look different, but I still don't know. I will include a photo of a red-browed finch and see if it triggers any clues.
after viewing your photo of the juvenile, i think your bird does look bigger, but it certainly looks to have a Mannikin/Finch type of beak. So I will have to sit on the fence with this one.
my house is on the Redcliffe Peninsula, SE Qld and I have been working for 6+ years in Northern Rivers NSW so that has given me more opportunities for birding
at the moment I am between jobs and therefore taking advantage of the free time to increase my birding list
in October last year I had the opporutntity to go to USA on a study tour and took my camera with me

I'd agree with Shane - it's most likely a mannikin of some sort, and probably a juvenile.
Perhaps a juvenile chestnut-breasted mannikin or diamond firetail?
Cheers

I didn't see any other Chestnut-brested Mannikins or Diamond Firetails
but I did see plenty of Red-browed Finches

the closest match I can find is the juvenile Red-browed Finch, and after blowing up your photo there seems to be a small dark red patch near the eye.

thanks for the suggestions
I will attach my photo of a juvenile Red-browed Finch
my impression at the time was of a bigger bird but there were plenty others around at the time
