Thanks Tim. Just down loaded the free app.

Reflex, it reads it's only good for North America.  Good thing it was free.

I'll be honest, I'd prefer to ID myself rather than let technology do it for me. It doesn't help you learn as much as a field guide or being with others in the field. I'm not totally against it, people can do what they want but you can't always get a photo and that's when you need your own knowledge. It's more rewarding too.

It's an interesting development though, thanks TIm.

Yes agreed, part of the joy/challenge of birding is to work out the identity.  However there have been times when we've had to send a photo to someone more experienced to get an ID.   I'd say that for us, the app probably has limited use in the field but at home when we are discussing an "unknown " in a photo, it could be quite good.  In addition, as a fellow birder suggested tto us, often the song is as useful as a visual ID.

Without having it, I wonder if it could be used for bird calls. A bird call app would help with trying to get a few visitors in a hopefull area.  Kind of cheating though.

The Morecombe bird app and the Pizzey bird app both have calls, and both are available for ios and android phones and tablets.

They are different to use, and both hava advantages and disadvatages, and we use them frequently, particularly the Morecome one.

Not keen on using them to attract birds however.  There was a story a couple of years ago aboutr an unusual sighting near Sydney an people were using the app to attract the bird to the point that it was exhausted.

So timrob it reads you prefer te Morecome more so.  Care to expand on advantages and disadvantages.  It doest surprise me people over did it with electronic technology, especially with "the easier" path.

Jason,

I think it is for us, more a case of familiarity than "better or worse".  Morcombe was out at least a year before Pizzey and with frequent use we got to know it well.

We have both because the reviews of Pizzey were very good - and might I say Jjustified.

Both have the same basic structure:

- choose your area eg central east coast

- then choose the species that you think is the correct one

- at that point you have access to distribution map, nest type, various pictures and voice recordings.
